I agree with you here, Sam, insofar as no one can expect ANY company to make every single product the fanbase wishes they had; that’s absurd, and no company DOES that. :/ Even for very, very big properties like Shonen Jump titles, ‘official’ clothing for cosplay or props isn’t made in full-blown complete outfits. Making your own props/cosplays/etc should definitely be the first thing to go to, not ‘you owe me these products’.

But…

About the scalemates. There was a tutorial and pattern on how to make your own. Keyword being was. Andrew asked for it to be taken down; and it was. It’s a bit difficult to find information on how to make them, now, if you want to do it yourself. It’s certainly much more difficult to draft and sew one yourself if you’ve never done it before. 

I’m not saying that he shouldn’t have asked for it to be removed. He was completely within the right to do so.

The problem was because people weren’t just using it to make scalemates, they were using it to profit off of Homestuck. They were selling scalemates to people who couldn’t or were too lazy to make their own. This isn’t limited to the scalemate tutorial either; horns as a product also comes to mind, and the more information for making things quickly and simply is out there the more this is going to happen. There’s nothing wrong in telling someone how to make something, but when someone takes that information and turn around and starts selling it, then there’s a problem. And then the only way to deal with that is to remove the information that makes it possible for people to profit off of it. It suddenly becomes a lot harder for people to find the information to make their own, and those people in turn perceive that it’s now Andrew’s duty to make up for that deficit in knowledge/scalemates by selling them himself, especially because he had to ask for the information to be removed. And it really, really isn’t.

When ‘share and enjoy’ becomes ‘let’s make a fast buck’, everyone gets screwed over. So please, guys, don’t do it. :/
